Happy New Year!

Reflecting on a life that is to be of godliness with help from Thomas Watson:

CHRISTIAN READER,

The soul being so precious and salvation so glorious, it is the highest point of prudence to make preparations for another world. It is beyond all dispute that there is an inheritance in light, and it is most strenuously asserted in Holy Scripture that there must be a fitness and suitability for it (Col 1:12). If anyone asks, ‘Who shall ascend into the hill of the Lord?’ (Psa 24:4). To describe such a person is the work of this ensuing treatise. Here you have the godly man’s portrait, and see him portrayed in his full lineaments. What a rare thing godliness is! It is not airy and puffed up, but solid, and such as will take up the heart and spirits. Godliness consists in an exact harmony between holy principles and practices.

So sublime is godliness that it cannot be delineated in its perfect radiance and luster, though an angel should take the pencil. Godliness is our wisdom. ‘The fear of the Lord, that is wisdom’ (Job 28:28). Policy without piety is profound madness.

Godliness is a spiritual queen, and whoever marries her is sure of a large dowry with her. Godliness has the promise of the present life and of that which is to come (1 Tim 4:8). Godliness gives assurance, yes, holy triumph in God, and how sweet that is (Isa 32:17). It was old Latimer who said, ‘When sometimes I sit alone, and have a settled assurance of the state of my soul, and know that God is my God, I can laugh at all troubles, and nothing can daunt me.’

Godliness puts a man in heaven before his time. Christian, aspire after piety; it is a lawful ambition. Look at the saints’ characteristics here, and never leave off till you have got them stamped your own soul. This is the grand business that should swallow up your time and thoughts. Other speculations and quaint notions are nothing to the soul. They are like wafers which have fine works printed upon them, and are curiously damasked to the eye, but are thin, and yield little nourishment.

That the God of grace will effectually accomplish this shall be the prayer of him who is.

Greetings and blessings. Thank you for stepping in. Please stay a while? Hmmm, intimate theology? What in the world? Yup, let's be honest it's different. Well so is theology. In fact so is Christianity, unarguably the most intimate faith of all faiths. My faith is the name and ideology of a person, Jesus Christ. Jesus Christ a historical, crucified, resurrected man came to the earth to die for sinners and Jesus Christ is the only answer. But don't take my word for it. I taste it and see it tangibly every day. Sin. So you're calling me a sinner? Yes. That's what my Savior identified as my problem. He's right. That's where intimacy comes in. This theolog is the person, the work, and the Word of Christ. Like Christ, intimate theology is close, not distant in proximity. It "saturates the common clay of man's humanity" as Tom Skinner put it. Christ is up in your business every day. As a Christian who has been to seminary I have studied systematic theology, Reformed theology, liberation theology, Catholic theology...there are so many more modes of theology but what I've discovered to be most engaging and relevant and even eternal is the intimate relationship and theology of Jesus Christ. Indeed intimacy is scary and sometimes so is following Christ, just ask the Apostles and the real Christians (when you read about them and meet them). In a genuinely intimate relationship everything is laid bare between two people. Everything. Jesus Christ wants everything. In fact Jesus Christ demands everything. That's the purpose of my blog and ministry. Theology, the study of God is not something that is only done in a seminary or monastery or church building or in one day or one year. Intimate theology is a lifelong intimacy with Jesus Christ. We are all theologians and we interpret life through our theology. Christ's theology is profoundly intimate and radical and for me, the thoughts in this weblog are what I've found to be non-dogmatic, non-institutional, honest, helpful, and intimate thoughts for far more faithful and close followers of Christ that lead to deeper intimacy with Christ and with others. Jesus Christ declares "I Am The Way, The Truth, and The Life." Follow the Truth, intimately. On the left are my Bible verses committed to memory which continue to grow in number the more God impresses my soul, heart, and mind with His Word. Along with Scripture memory is my favorite worship song of the month. And finally, below are favorite quotes or "Phrase Faves" from past and present. Blocking this cookie would prevent Google Docs from operating correctly.
Advertising	We use cookies to make advertising more engaging to users and more valuable to publishers and advertisers. Some common applications of cookies are to select advertising based on what’s relevant to a user; to improve reporting on campaign performance; and to avoid showing ads the user has already seen. Google uses cookies like NID and SID to help customize ads on Google properties, like Google Search. For example, we use such cookies to remember your most recent searches, your previous interactions with an advertiser’s ads or search results, and your visits to an advertiser’s website. This helps us to show you customized ads on Google. We also use cookies for advertising we serve across the web. Our main advertising cookie on non-Google sites is called ‘id’ and it is stored in browsers under the domain doubleclick.net. We use others with names such as _drt_, FLC, and exchange_uid. Other Google properties, like YouTube, may also use these cookies to show you more relevant ads. Sometimes an advertising cookie may be set on the domain of the site you are visiting.
